After my grandfather’s death in 2014, I was struck with the only non-familial line of his obituary: he was a lifetime employee of the Elmhurst Chicago Stone Company. This reality of his life was so in contrast to my path up to this point, involving multiple occupational shifts, typically working behind a computer or with paper. Lifetime Employee, created in 2015, is a meditation on our differences and similarities in our work lives. Stone Company, created in 2020, is a continued investigation, incorporating archival photography of the quarry he worked at incorporated into the compositions.
