A Collaborative Commission by Zach Clark
February 11 - June 21 2026
Opening Reception February 12th, 5-7pm | Artist Talk Saturday February 28th, 2pm..

Walking The Quiet is a collection of 63 risograph prints that capture the sacred and secular spaces of Saint Mary’s College of California, a Lasallian liberal arts college founded in 1862, located in Moraga, CA.
The printed matter within this body of work was created by Zach Clark, but is very much the product of a semester-long collaboration with Dr. Porsia Tunzi’s Fall 2025 Intercultural Interfaith Leadership course, and britt royer & Désirée Sturrock of Saint Mary’s College Museum of Art, with additional support from the SMC archive, staff, and faculty.
From September through December, 2025, Clark met with students to discuss place, lore, and belonging on campus. Based on these conversations, students were broken into groups to explore, research, and finally photograph selected sites of the SMC landscape with disposable cameras provided by Zach. Once the students had shot their rolls of film, Zach collected the cameras, removed the 35mm film, and then reshot each roll within the same thematic parameters, creating unpredictable double exposures that capture multiple perspectives of a place over the passage of time.
The selected images, along with a collection of images from the SMC archives, were then printed at Chute Studio, in Oakland,California, using a Risograph MZ1090 & SF9450. Images were printed in one to four colors, using Sky Blue, Fluorescent Pink, Brick, Light Lime, Sunflower, Midnight, Kelly Green, Moss, Violet, Flat Gold, Fluorescent Orange, Scarlet, Federal Blue, and Turquoise inks, all on to French paper. The accompanying portfolio case was letterpress printed with a Vandercook 219 at San Francisco Center for the Book, San Francisco, CA.
Many of the risograph prints were made with the help of [color/shift] color profiles created by Travis Shaffer at the University of Missouri School of Visual Studies, as well as separations created within Spectrolite, a project by Seattle-based artist initiative ANEMONE (Amelia & Adam Greenhall).
All typography within this project and exhibition was set in Garamond as an homage to the French roots of the Lasallian Christian Brothers and Saint Mary’s College.
Walking The Quiet was created for the exhibition of the same name at Saint Mary’s College Museum of Art, February 11 - June 21, 2026, and was made possible by the generous commission of Saint Mary’s College Museum of Art Acquisition Fund, and the Spring 2025 Core 370: Acquiring Art class.
